Our April paintout is the
Canary Islands.
Open for participation from
April 1st till April 30th.
NEW RULE - SEE BELOW!
NEW RULE - SEE BELOW!
You'll find an interactive map of the Canary Islands above, though you can't access the little yellow pegman from that map. Use the link below it "View Larger Map", and the map will appear on your monitor; drag the little Yellow Man onto the map, let go while he's over a blue area, and start exploring. Find an interesting subject/area. Change it all you want. Or paint it straight up as you see it. Instructions are in the sidebar to the right. Any questions, ask 'em in the comments or email me directly.
Again this month I tried to find an area that gives a full range of subject matter. I think the Canary Islands fits the bill. Yet another place I now want to visit.
IMPORTANT NEWS!
With the popularity of this project seemingly to grow monthly (117 submissions in March), it is necessary for me to stress a couple of rules. One is the image size issue. It has always stated in the rules in the right sidebar on this blog that the image has to be at a resolution of 72 and no larger than 1000 pixels on the widest side. Each month I have to re-size at least a third of all submissions. With so many participating now I don't have the time to do that any longer. Submissions not following the rules will not be posted.
A new rule is that each artist must now include the URL of the location that the artwork is based upon. To find the URL is easy. In the maps mode, while looking at your scene you have chosen, click the "LINK" button at the top right of the screen, you will see two options that open for you, CHOOSE THE TOP ONE, "Paste link in email or IM". With that link highlighted simply copy it and paste into your email with your submission. (How do you not lose your location? Click "SEND" with your view up and email it to yourself.) Remember, these buttons are found at the top right of the map, in the light blue bar.
So there you go. Should be extremely easy. If your submission doesn't show up on the blog, please check the list near the top in the sidebar entitled, "Don't see your submission? This could be the reason..." Thanks.
And thank you, artists, for participating.
Remember, participation is open to all levels of artistic ability.
NOW LET'S HAVE SOME FUN!
Congratulations for the new URL rules.
ReplyDeleteI'm very curious about the creativity of the artists and several times I simply cannot find the view which was the inspiration and beginning of that.
I hope you publish that URL to all.
Thanks
:-)
I was worried, but i figured it out. Actually, I am glad to know how to return to exactly the same spot.
ReplyDeleteHi Murilo. I'm still not sure I'll post the URL for all to see. Sorry. It's really for my benefit, so I don't have to guess if folks are following the rules about using a Street View and not a photo found somewhere. I was wasting a lot of my time having to hold the artwork back, and email artists to ask about their reference, then going back and posting, or having to explain the rules again.
ReplyDeleteWith this new rule, and the fact that it makes an artist save the original location, it should be easy to email the artist and ask to see it, or have them post it on their blog, if you were interested.
Hi Sherry. Glad you figured it out. Very simple. I figured if an artist can use Street View they can click a couple of buttons on the same page they're looking at already. Save that location!
if the URL is really long, can I use TinyURL to make it smaller?
ReplyDeleteHi Chartan. Please go by the rules above. Thanks. Bill
ReplyDeleteViva Bill, The Virtual Paintout is getting very
ReplyDeleteinteresting and high quality, unfortunately only attended
in Lisbon, but I'll make an effort to be more
present.
Thank you for your efforts on behalf of all.
Congratulations, a friend of Portugal
This is fantastic! Will be following and may attempt to join in!
ReplyDeleteI am very excited about the possibilities of virtual paintout, I am not sure that I understand how to see the reference picture, when I click zoon I see the roof of buildings but not the pictures. Please help me to understand how this work.
ReplyDeleteThanks,
Hi Damiao. Thanks. Hope to have you join us again.
ReplyDeleteHello Cat. Jump on in...the waters fine!
ReplyDeleteHi Lucia. Just drag and drop the little yellow pegman onto the streets that turn blue. All instructions and rules are in the sidebar of this blog.
ReplyDeleteHi Bill. What fun! I had difficulty printing my destination photo, so I grabbed my camera and photographed my laptop screen while it was up, went into photoshop and did some levels and voila! I can see this will grow and grow...hope you get some of your own painting done, in the meantime. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi Pattie. I did the photographing the screen thing at first. Then I figured out how to take a screenshot and open that in Photoshop. Then it was a basic exercise in cropping and adjusting until I had the ref I wanted.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what type of system you're using, but on my PC I hold down 'alt' and hit the 'print screen' button to copy what's on my screen; then I go to Photoshop and chose FILE>NEW. At that point the dimensions for the new file are the size of what copied when I took the screenshot. I open the new file, and hit 'Ctrl V' to paste it (the screenshot) into the blank file. I then flatten, save, and start adjusting.
Thanks, it is growing each month. And I am getting some painting time in also. Going to go start a "cabin commission" in the morning. Hope to get a lot done on site.
Glad to have you participating.
Bill
This looks like a really fun idea. I'm looking forward to trying it out this month. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the print screen to Photoshop info, Bill. That's very helpful!
ReplyDeleteI saw your work at the Abend holiday show in Dec. (I was also in the show.) I loved all those mini landscapes you did!
This is a lot of work for you, and you are appreciated by many. I now know how to take a virtual vacation, not to mention finding places to paint without leaving my studio!
